Corfu Eating & Drinking

Although there are the inevitable tourist traps, Kérkyra Town offers some excellent, quality restaurants. As well as those listed below, there are several decent psarotavérnes on the Garítsa seafront, though you need to be careful of the fish prices.

Aleko's Beach, Faliráki jetty. Set in the tiny harbour below the palace with great views, this place offers simple, mostly grilled meat and fish dishes at good prices.

Mourayia, Arseníou 15-17. This unassuming, good-value ouzer?near the Byzantine Museum does a range of tasty mezédhes, including sausage and seafood such as mussels and shrimp. One of the best seafront establishments.

Orestes, Xenophóndos Stratigóu, in Mandoúki. Probably the best fish and seafood restaurant in town, and better priced than the central or Garítsa equivalents.

Papiris, Ayías Theodóras 25. A well-concealed Campiello restaurant serving fine family cooking such as meats in rich sauces. Justifiably popular with locals.

To Paradosiakon, Solomo?20. Behind the Old Port, this friendly place serves good fresh food, especially home-style oven dishes like stifádho and kokkinist?.

Rex, Zavitsiánou behind the Listón. Pricey owing to its location, but some of the best food in the centre, mixing Greek with north European.

Tenedos, 1st Párodhos Solomo?1, Spili? At the foot of the steps to the Néo Froúrio, this place offers an excellent range of mezédhes, eg courgette fritters and yígandes plus succulent meat dishes to the accompaniment of subtle live guitar music.

Venetian Well Bistro, Platía Kremásti. A well-kept secret, tucked away in a tiny square a few alleys to the south of the cathedral, this is the nearest you're likely to get to Greek nouvelle cuisine , with large portions, and exotica such as wild boar in red wine sauce and Albanian calves' livers done in oúzo. Very expensive.

Yioyias, Guildford St. The best all-round-value taverna in town, set in an atmospheric pedestrianized road. Wonderful range of mezédhes, meat - try the sofríto - and fish dishes, all washed down with fine (and cheap) barrelled wine.
